Then the downpour started.
Within minutes (maybe about 10) the street in front of my house had overflowed. There was a drain clog; the water had nowhere to go. Knee-high deep water spun and churned as the street river gained in size. I could do nothing but watch in amazement at natures fury (well, I could film it of course!).
Logic would predicate that cars not try to drive through rivers--but, who gives. This is a student community. Students are prone to doing dumb stuff; "learn through your errors," ma pa always used to say (I actually have no clue if he said that."
Anyhow, there were a few notable moments. First off, there is some blue car just a few houses down. The owner--and driver--thought it would be fun to jump in his car and 'floor it' through a torrent of water. This I got on video.
Another moment of interest is what some of the people across the street tried to do. They had an old dilapidated mattress kicking around. Now, who in there right mind would give up a chance to sail down their street? And, that's exactly what they tried to do. They plopped the mattress in the water's deepest point, jumped on it, and tried paddling with a snow shovel. Of course, as anyone who's spilled something in their bed knows (or was a dirty bed-wetter), mattresses soak up liquids. Down the ship sank. Fortunately, I caught it on video, so it will always sail on the waves of the web.
These moments were fun and funny. But, sometimes people are just jerks. A red SUV started it's way down the street. People were yelling at him to turn around, so he stopped for a sec. Now, the reason why we were telling him to turn around was because a Cavalier (recyclable can) had gotten stuck--and almost blown it's engine (smoke was flying everywhere... could have been steam, but it still wasn't a good sign). We had to push it out (well, I didn't... I don't like the idea of going near a smoking car, and the people were too silly to shut it off, even though the exhaust was buried under water).
Now back to the idiot in the SUV. The SUV stopped with just its front wheels in the water. It could have easily backed up--but, it didn't. He floored it forward on someone's lawn. Then, not knowing that stopping and backing up leads to getting stuck, he tried just that. Dirt and grass flew up in the air as he drilled trenches into some poor person's lawn. He got nowhere. He was stuck. He stops for a sec (probably cursing) and floors it forward. He flies down the street... on the sidewalk. Yes I laughed, but if I saw the guy face-to-face, I'd probably (be very very 'civil'). He messed up some guy's lawn because he has no clue how to drive--plus, he decided to take it upon himself to wreck everyone else's down the side of the street.
So, it's been an interesting evening.
